Mesothelioma Settlement

A mesothelioma settlement basically consists of money that can be awarded to people that are victims of mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure. Asbestos has been used for centuries and was used extensively starting in the late 1800's. It was commonly utilized during construction of houses and commercial buildings.

It is a fibrous material and the danger occurs from inhaling the fibers that fill the air when working with the material.

Asbestos and Cancer

Mesothelioma SettlementAsbestos was used for centuries in a number of different applications. Because it is fire retardant and heat resistant it was commonly used in construction. Drywall containing asbestos was used for walls and ceilings. It was also used as insulation. Many commercial buildings, including schools, were built using materials that contained asbestos.

Another area that it was commonly used in was shipbuilding, especially during World War II. Shipbuilders used it to insulate boilers, line pipes and to cover ship engines. Even more examples of its wide array of uses include roofing, fire fighting suits and even hairdryers.

In the early 1900's it was noticed that people who worked with asbestos were getting sick. It is believed that the manufacturers of asbestos were aware of the health risks as early as the 1930's but concealed it from the public. It wasn't until the 1970's that asbestos was banned from being used in many different areas, but by then the damage was done. However, help is available and many victims have been awarded money through a mesothelioma settlement process.

The asbestos fibers that are inhaled are directly related to causing cancer of the mesothelia, a disease known as mesothelioma. The mesothelia is the lining that surrounds organs such as the heart and lungs, along with the organs of the abdominal cavity. Smokers are often more susceptible to this disease than non-smokers, but it can happen to anybody that was exposed to asbestos fibers.

Symptoms of the disease can include (but are not limited to) breathing difficulties such as wheezing or shortness of breath, anemia and weight loss. Diagnosis is made using tests such as a CT scan, MRI or biopsies. Problems that occur from asbestos exposure may not even manifest themselves for at least 20 years.

Mesothelioma Treatment and Settlement Factors

There are four different stages of mesothelioma.

If the disease is caught early in enough (in stages 1 or 2), chemotherapy and radiation treatments are often recommended. Unfortunately if it isn't caught early it can lead to numerous other complications such as tumor masses. It can also spread throughout the body. Although surgery is sometimes an option it usually is performed along with chemo and/or radiation.

People that have been diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure might be entitled to a mesothelioma settlement, depending on the circumstances. Some of these factors might include the state that you live in, the damage that you incurred and your level of asbestos exposure. Being informed about your rights and exploring your options are two steps that you can take to find out whether you qualify for money due to asbestos exposure and the onset of mesothelioma.
